Scrapbook, 1819-1871.

Blank book containing autograph entries, artwork, clippings and other printed material, and tipped in manuscript items assembled by Bracebridge over several decades. The volume contains a variety of antiquarian and historical notes, including extracts from original sources and translations; copies of poems by Pope, Spenser, Goethe and others; occasional verse by Bracebridge himself; genealogical information; bibliographical entries; and notes on Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands. Material related to Florence Nightingale includes "A Song of Welcome to Charles Holte Bracebridge Esq and his Wife," printed broadside; "Lord Raglan Visiting Florence Nightingale on the Genoese Heights, Balaklava, May 28," printed copy, signed with initials "C.S.B.;" a clipping from an Italian newspaper, n.d.; and the remains of two leaves taken from a grave in 1855 by Nightingale. Other contents include clippings by and about Bracebridge and his literary activities; silhouettes; and sketches of bookplates and coats of arms.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), nursing pioneer and reformer, is regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Born in Florence, Italy, she dedicated her life to the care of the sick and war wounded. In 1844, she began to visit hospitals; in 1850, she spent some time with the nursing Sisters of St. Vincent de Paul in Alexandria and a year later studied at the institute for Protestant deaconesses in Kaiserswerth, Germany. In 1854, she organized a unit of 38 nurses for service in the Crimean War. I...
